Back-Split-Flip

This project was commissioned from a builder looking to set their company apart. This architecturally progressive home reflects the clients’ willingness to break from the norm of traditional houses, which allowed us to create a unique and provocative design solution. The proposal for a boldly modern rectilinear building form, paired with cool materials, including dark brick and zinc cladding, is in stark contrast to its surrounding homes, provoking a sense of curiosity and bringing a re-imagined reality to the neighborhood. The architecture is atypical for the context, but with a younger population moving in and much of the neighbourhood undergoing renovation, this modern home is likely to be the first of many.

Embracing the unique nature of the existing back-split home, the first and second levels remained, and a third and fourth level were added to accommodate more living space. Large windows at the front of the home showcase a double volume space that makes up the first floor library, and a study for the kids located directly above. Natural light pours in to both spaces, creating a pleasant environment to study and lounge. At the core of the home, a ribbon like stair connects all 6 levels (4 above grade, 2 below), creating a dynamic and interconnected interior. At the rear of the home is the great room and kitchen, with large bi-folding doors that open on to a rear terrace.

The clients goal of updating a home in an up-and-coming neighbourhood, paired with their willingness to express their individuality, produced a design solution that satisfies function, fulfills desire, and encourages curiosity.
